Title:  Caring for the Pediatric Surgical Patient

Date – October 31, 2014

Location – St Tammany Parish Hospital, Mandeville Conference Room

Activity Description/Objective:  Caring for the pediatric patient is a specialized nursing area and requires knowledge and skills on childhood growth and development as well as the special nursing care needs for the pediatric patient.  When a child is preparing and recovering from surgery, the nurse must be knowledgeable of the normal recovery as well as able to identify signs and symptoms of decline in recovery.  This learning activity will enable the nurse to care for the pediatric patient who is preparing and recovering from common surgeries.  The nurse will be able to assess the patient based on their developmental stage and identify normal and abnormal assessment findings as well as nursing interventions.

Target Audience:  Registered Nurses who care for the pediatric patient in the acute care setting

Title: Inpatient Glycemic Control – How Sweet It Is Should It Be?

Date – November 7, 2014

Location – North Oaks Health System, ODC Conference Center Room A

Program Description/Target Group – The control of blood glucose in the hospitalized patient has shown improved recovery and decrease in related adverse events.  This learning activity will provide the nurse the evidence-based practice, outcome data and methodology that promotes the practice of glycemic control in the acute care setting.  The nurse will utilize physiologic insulin replacement therapy for the hospitalized diabetic patient and promote glycemic control.

Target Audience:  Registered Nurses who care for diabetic patients in the acute care setting

Title:  Caring for the patient with neurological alterations from assessment to post-op

Date – November 18, 2014

Location – St Tammany Parish Hospital, Mandeville Conference Room

Program Purpose – Nursing care for the patient with neurological alterations takes a keen assessment and timely intervention.  Nurses in the acute care setting may have limited experience in the evidence-based nursing care to include assessment and post-operative care.  This learning activity will enable the nurse practicing in the acute care setting to accurately assess and care for the patient with neurological alterations and will include the NIH Stroke Scale, post-op management for post-craniotomy/craniectomy as well as elevated ICP.

Target Audience:  Registered Nurses who care for patients with neurological alterations in the acute care setting

Title:  Antibiotics: Making the best choices for 5 common infections

 Date – December 5, 2014

Location – Slidell Memorial Hospital, SMH Founders Conference Room

Program Purpose – The purpose of this activity is to enable the learner to understand and respond to complaints and grievances in a TJC accredited healthcare facility in Louisiana, in addition to learning effective communication techniques to include a standardized report sheet and bedside shift reporting to improve communication among caregivers.

Target Audience:  Registered Nurses caring for patients in all settings with common infections and Advanced Practice Nurses who prescribe antibiotics

Participants will earn 3.0 of advanced pharmacology contact hours of continuing nursing education for attending the entire activity and completing the evaluation
