Pediatric Sedation Renewal Course

Date: October 2, 2026
Format: Live via Zoom — counts toward in-person hours

C.E. Hours: Up to 6 hours that count toward in-person hours and your pediatric sedation license renewal

Licensure Requirement

The Louisiana State Board of Dentistry requires that dentists with adult sedation permits take six hours to renew every two years. Additionally, the LSBD requires that dentists with sedation permits for pediatric patients complete six hours of pediatric sedation renewal and six hours of adult sedation renewal every two years. If the permit holder has a pediatric certification, sedates only persons below the age of 13, and signs a certification to that effect, then only the six-hour in-person pediatric sedation course is necessary.

You can still take this course even if you don’t have a permit, don’t want to apply for one, or don’t want to renew yours.

Moderate Sedation for Pediatric Patients: Review and Updates (6 hours)

This course serves as a review and update of moderate sedation for pediatric patients. It is intended to provide dentists with the basic knowledge and core competencies that promote safe and effective dental sedation in children. The course focuses on patient selection and risk assessment (safety), the general approach to procedural sedation in pediatric dentistry, sedation monitoring, sedative drug pharmacology, and the recognition and management of the more common sedation-related adverse events.

The Louisiana State Board of Dentistry requires that dentists with sedation permits for pediatric patients attend a live, six-hour course every two years. This course meets the requirements for renewal of a moderate sedation permit for pediatric patients in Louisiana.

Course Objectives

After participating in this course, participants will be better able to:

Assess the suitability of moderate sedation for the delivery of dental care for pediatric patients
Differentiate pediatric anatomy and physiology in contrast to an adult patient
Apply basic behavior guidance for the pediatric dental patient to augment moderate sedation
Utilize weight-based dosages of sedation medications used in pediatric sedation and emergency management
Assess the scope of moderate sedation for children with special healthcare needs / non-ASA I patients
Understand the role of inhalational nitrous oxide in augmenting pediatric dental sedations
Understand the role and safety limits of local anesthetics when used for pediatric dental sedations
Manage sedation-related emergencies that can occur in pediatric patients

Instructor: Dr. Priyanshi Ritwik

Dr. Ritwik is Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at UT Houston School of Dentistry. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American College of Dentists. Dr. Ritwik regularly provides lectures and continuing education courses on pediatric oral health topics for various national and international groups. She balances her academic career in pediatric dentistry by teaching doctoral and post-doctoral students, maintaining clinical practice, conducting research, and promoting interprofessional collaborative practice for advancing pediatric oral health. Dr. Ritwik completed her residency in Pediatric Dentistry at LSUHSC New Orleans. She also received her Master’s Degree in Oral Biology at LSUHSC. Dr. Ritwik serves as consultant to many national and international organizations such as the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Event Description

This seminar helps provide last-minute continuing education hours to dentists and their staff. Typically, this seven-hour clinical course is held the second Friday in December. It’s one of our most well-attended events each year.

Dr. Carla Cohn

Dr. Cohn is a general dentist devoted solely to the practice of dentistry for children. She maintains private practice at Kids Sleep Dentistry Winnipeg in Winnipeg, Canada. Dr. Cohn has published several articles and hundreds of webinars and live courses. She enjoys teaching all aspects of children’s dentistry for the general practitioner and has had the pleasure of doing so both nationally and internationally. Dr. Cohn is proud to be an active member of several dental organizations and societies. She has been invited as a fellow to the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the International College of Dentists and has been recognized as Dentistry Today’s Leader in Continuing Education multiple years in a row, as well as Top 100 Docs.
